In 1973, local course designer, Ted Cox, designed what is now the front nine at Friendly Meadows. He took part of the 180 acres that were once a dairy farm, laid out and constructed the first nine holes. From 1973 to 1985, Friendly Meadows played as a nine-hole track, offering a great short course for local patrons.
In 1986, course owner, Steve Oberschlake added the back nine himself, making Friendly Meadows a true labor of love and the perfect example of what a family business is supposed to be. 2007 marks Friendly Meadows' 35 year anniversary. And, over the last 35 years, the course has undergone architectural and structural improvements every year. The transition from Rye-Bluegrass to zoysia grass fairways has been the latest in this line of improvements. This transition makes for a better playing surface, but also helps to cut down on the amount of water needed for irrigation and the amount of pesticides needed to protect the grass. The transition is just one more example of Friendly Meadows' commitment to great golf living in harmony with nature. |
